Wood Selector, soundboards
To help you choose from our list of soundboard wood options, we have prepared this set of various wood slices. The samples are divided into rows across (left to right) of slices from the same piece and species of wood, and columns (top to bottom) of four finishes: plain, lacquered, stained, and stained-and-lacquered.
Row 1 (across, left to right) is Douglas Fir. Row 2 is Western Red Cedar. Row 3 is California Redwood. Row 4 is Sitka Spruce. Row 5 is Adirondack Red Spruce.
The first column (up and down) is plain wood. The second column has one coat of clear lacquer, the third column is unfinished wood with one coat of brown analine die, and the fourth column has one coat of brown analine die with one coat of clear lacquer.
Please read the "viewing criteria" below.
Viewing criteria:
1) We have applied the black background to help you view the images relative to a neutral "surround" or field.
2) Color management settings in your computer's browser and on your computer display may have an affect on the perception of the color images you see. Because of color settings in various computers, web browsers, and your local viewing conditions, use these images as a relative sample palette only and not as actual wood colors.
3) Color prints made of this web page may not have accurate or matching colors for several of the reasons described in #2 above, as well as pigment (ink) and substrate (paper) issues relative to your color printer.
4) The original wood slices are 2" x 2". The size displayed here will be depending on the size of the monitor you are using and the scaling set in your web browser. (Therefore grain mat appear closer or further apart than actual size.)
5) The same brown stain color is applied to the wood samples in the Backboard Samples page so they will appear relative to these soundboard samples.
